Presenting Lyric
My name is Lyric Shaw,
I am 20 years old studying animation at Columbia College Chicago. In my free time I love to create. I often paint, draw, and crotchet. Being that I am from Pennsylvania I also enjoy spending time outside with my friends. We go kayaking, hiking, swimming, and much more. I find a lot of fascination in large cities and what they hold. I love the culture that is in them and the feeling that you will never run out of things to see. At the end of the day, I appreciate that the world is ever growing and creating opportunities to learn about new things.

Artist Statement
My truth lies in the label of multimedia artist. I create, I study, and I create again. My art is the struggles my mother has faced while raising me, it is the everyday efforts she put in. At Columbia I am a computer animation major and a graphic design minor. At home, I am a painter and illustrator. My strengths come from my ability to use numerous fine arts mediums. Graphite, pastel, charcoal, acrylic, watercolor, colored pencil, ink, and marker. I screen print, I sculpt, I sew. I project my creativity in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. I access my mind’s visions and voices and translate it to physical beings. I turn clients’ dreams into manifestations.
I am driven. Driven by the endless possibilities that my continuously expanding and always changing set of skills and knowledge hold. My mind is fed by culture, inspired by social change, and claimed by black excellence. This isn’t a “want,” this is a “must,” a need to create. My work consists of the colors of “us.” On the outside we are shades of brown, black, peach, beige, tan. On the inside we are the colors of the rainbow. I draw people, their beauty and the qualities that are considered ugly. I draw their feelings, their accomplishments, and their struggles.
My truth is that I create for others, because I care. Art is my happiness. But I want it to be for others too. I express and share to create a world that leaves no room for those close to me to struggle. I aspire to grow and gain experience and job positions. The possibility that I could someday see my mom watch something I animated on a big screen is my dream.
